An integrated course in analytic geometry and calculus applied to functions of a single variable. A study of functions; limits; continuity; related rates; differentiation of algebraic and transcendental functions; Rolle’s Theorem; The Mean Value Theorem; Maxima and Minima; curve sketching; differentials; and introduction to integration. MAT 301 has a computer laboratory component. Students utilize computer software such as graphing packages, a computer algebra system, and a mathematical word processor to complete laboratory assignments associated with their calculus course. Prerequisites / Co-requisites: Precalculus (MAT 206) or the equivalent with departmental approval.

Lab: The lab is a requirement for the calculus course. All students must complete all the lab projects for 15% toward the grade. Although attendance is not mandatory for Asynchronous class but student who attends the lab benefit more from the lab instructor. Please look forward for more information about the lab from the lab instructor.

Prerequisites / Co-requisites: Precalculus (MAT 206) or the equivalent with departmental approval.

Required Text & Instructional Materials .

  1. Calculus: Early Transcendental Functions.

  2. Students will be using MAPLE.

  3. Online Delivery System: You will use both the blackboard course system and a Web-based math system.

Online Learning Orientation:

All students must complete the Online Learning Orientation before the course begins. If you have completed the orientation previously, please upload the certificate. Discussion Board:

The discussion board is a platform designed for you to collaborate with your classmates in a constructive manner. Two to Three questions will be posted each week at the discussion board that you must answer. The discussions will take many forms. All postings must be in sentence and paragraph format and should be checked for spelling and grammar. You are required to make at least 3 constructive posting per module, by adding new threads and responding to your peers. The main purpose of this learning activities is to prompt you to keep up with the required readings for each module, besides creating a positive learning environment through peer group support. For each discussion board you are expected to make at least one original posting for the question posted and reply to at least two peers.

Time Commitment:

Note that an online course may need more time commitment than an outside course. Since this is an online course, the 4 hours a week that you normally use to attend lectures should be spent on online classroom activities (at least 16 hours per module each week). These include attending self-paced web lecture slides and taking quizzes and exams.

Any college course also requires at least two hours of study-time for every lecture hour. Thus, you should allocate at least another 4 hours a week on “study-time activities” such as reading your textbook, solving suggested homework problems, working on assigned homework and projects, participating in your online discussion board (make postings and respond to posting) and attempting module tests.

Note: This course may take more time than you expect. To be successful in this course, please set aside at least four hours a day for a minimum of 4 days per week.

Homework: The homework can be attempted multiple time until you achieve a mastery level of 80% or better. The last score will count as your grade.

Quizzes: The quizzes are timed for 60 minutes. Once started, you must complete the quiz in 60 minutes. Quizzes can be taken only twice. Do not wait until the last minute because computer problems will not be a valid excuse.

Final Exam: The schedule final exam is timed for 3 hours (180 minutes). Final Exam can be taken only once. Problems not answered within the time limit will be counted as incorrect.

Your performance will be determined by homework, quizzes, tests, midterm, discussion board and final exam according to the distribution above.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Course Student Learning Outcomes   Measurements   1. Students will be able to calculate the limit analytically and geometrically.  They will use the limit to determine continuity.  1. Homework assignments and/or take home projects; Quizzes and/or Midterm Exams; Final Exam; Lab Projects.     2.    Students will be able to use the concept of the limit to compute the derivative. Students will be able to calculate the derivative for algebraic and transcendental functions.  Students will use implicit and explicit differentiation to solve applied problems.  2. Homework assignments and/or take home projects; Quizzes and/or Midterm Exams;   Final Exam; Lab Projects   3.    Students will be able to compute higher order derivatives and apply this to curve sketching and optimization problems.    3. Homework assignments and/or take home projects; Quizzes and/or Midterm Exams; Final Exam; Lab Projects.  4.    Students will be able to use the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus to compute the definite integral.  4.  Homework assignments and/or take home projects; Quizzes and/or Midterm Exams; Final Exam; Lab Projects.

General Education Outcomes and Assessment:

General Education Learning Outcomes  Measurements   Communication Skills – Students will be able to write, read, listen and speak critically and effectively. Assignments and/or take home projects; exams and/or Midterm Exam; Final Exam and Lab Projects.  Quantitative Reasoning – Students will be able to use quantitative skills and the concepts and methods of mathematics to solve problems. Assignments and/or take home projects; exams and/or Midterm Exam; Final Exam and Lab Projects.  Information & Technology Literacy – Students will be able to collect, evaluate and interpret information and effectively use information technologies. Assignments and/or take home projects; exams and/or Midterm Exam; Final Exam and Lab Projects.

Required Text:  Calculus: Early Transcendental Functions.
