Nissan Motor Company, currently facing financial difficulties, is considering two options: an acquisition proposal from Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn) and a potential business integration with Honda, a domestic competitor. Hon Hai aims to acquire not only Nissan's manufacturing facilities but the entire company, seeking to advance its entry into the EV manufacturing sector and gain automotive production expertise. Meanwhile, Honda is exploring options, including a business integration with Nissan, to reduce development costs for new technologies like EVs and autonomous driving and to strengthen its global competitiveness. Mitsubishi Motors is also reported to potentially join this integration.

Each stakeholder has its challenges. Nissan faces declining sales and deteriorating performance, requiring a significant business overhaul. However, its shareholders, including Renault, prefer self-reliant recovery. Honda, while performing well in its motorcycle division, struggles with low profitability in its automobile business and sees integration as a way to alleviate the burden of new technology development. Hon Hai aims to secure manufacturing facilities and expand its presence in the EV market but is observing the progress of Honda-Nissan negotiations before finalizing its approach.

Experts view the potential Honda-Nissan integration as a "union of the weak," casting doubt on whether it can achieve dominance in the EV sector. Nonetheless, it is expected to provide short-term relief for Nissan and long-term benefits for Honda by reducing technological development costs. The integration faces significant challenges, including overlapping business areas and the complexity of coordination, leaving the question of strengthening EV market competitiveness uncertain.

Whichever option Nissan pursues, substantial business reform is imperative. The progress of negotiations between Honda and Nissan and the developments in Hon Hai's strategy will play a crucial role in determining the future of Nissan's recovery efforts.
