A research team led by Chinese virologist Dr. Shi Zhengli has discovered a new bat coronavirus, "HKU5-CoV-2." This virus has the potential to infect humans through the same pathway as SARS-CoV-2 (the virus responsible for COVID-19), raising concerns about the risk of animal-to-human transmission and the need for pandemic preparedness.
HKU5-CoV-2 is a new strain of the HKU5 virus, which was originally found in Japanese pipistrelle bats in Hong Kong. It belongs to the same Merbecovirus subgenus as the virus that causes MERS.
