つける

"つける" has various meanings, and here I introduce some of the representative ones.

"つける" is used to mean making something attached or connected to another thing without separation. In this case, it is written in kanji as "付ける."

彼女は彼へのプレゼントにリボンを付けました。
かのじょはかれへのぷれぜんとにりぼんをつけました。
She attached a ribbon to his present.

部屋の壁に新しい時計を付けました。
へやのかべにあたらしいとけいをつけました。
I attached a new clock to the room's wall.

It is also used to mean wrapping or wearing something on the body. In this case, it is written as "着ける."

風邪をひいたのでマスクを着けます。
かぜをひいたのでますくをつけます。
I will wear a mask because I have caught a cold.

散歩に出かけるので犬に首輪を着けました。
さんぽにでかけるのでいぬにくびわをつけました。
I put a collar on the dog before going for a walk.

Furthermore, it is used to mean igniting a fire or turning on a device such as a switch to make it operate. This is written as "点ける."

寒いので、暖炉の火を点けた。
さむいので、だんろのひをつけた。
It's cold, so I lit the fireplace.

台風の情報が知りたいのでテレビを点けてください。
たいふうのじょうほうがしりたいのでてれびをつけてください。
Please turn on the TV because I want to know about the typhoon information.
