けど、のに

"けど" is a colloquial expression indicating contrast or contradiction.

お金はないけど、幸せです。
おかねはないけど、しあわせです。
I don't have money, but I am happy.

彼は若いけど、とても経験豊富です。
かれはわかいけど、とてもけいけんほうふです。
He is young, but very experienced.

While 'けど' is an objective expression, 'のに' expresses surprise or disappointment towards a result or situation contrary to expectations.

毎日ジムに通っているのに、体重が減らない。
まいにちじむにかよっているのに、たいじゅうがへらない。
I go to the gym every day, yet my weight doesn't decrease.

彼女は熱心に勉強したのに、試験に落ちてしまった。
かのじょはねっしんにべんきょうしたのに、しけんにおちてしまった。
She studied diligently, yet she failed the exam.

A) その店は小さいけど、品揃えが良い。
そのみせはちいさいけど、しなぞろえがよい。
A) The store is small, but well-stocked.

B) その店は小さいのに、品揃えが良い。
そのみせはちいさいのに、しなぞろえがよい。
B) The store is small, yet the selection is surprisingly good.

A) gives an impression of conveying an objective fact.
B) gives an impression of surprise that, despite being a small store, the selection surpasses expectations.
