かねる

"かねる" is an expression used to indicate that doing something is difficult.

彼は日本に留学するかまだ決めかねている。
かれはにほんにりゅうがくするかまだきめかねている。
He is still undecided about studying abroad in Japan.

何も情報がないので真偽は判断しかねます。
なにもじょうほうがないのでしんぎははんだんしかねます。
Without any information, it's hard to judge the truth.

It is also used when you want to indirectly express 'unfortunately, I can't do it' for something you don't want to do.

彼の提案には賛成しかねます。
かれのていあんにはさんせいしかねます。
I find it hard to agree with his proposal.

その要望にはお応えしかねます。
そのようぼうにはおこたえしかねます。
I am unable to comply with that request.

This usage is often seen in business interactions.

Furthermore, when used in the form "かねない", it becomes an expression indicating that something might happen or someone might do something.

このまま雨が続くと、ダムが決壊しかねない。
このままあめがつづくと、だむがけっかいしかねない。
If this rain continues, the dam might break.

新人をあまり厳しく指導をすると、会社を辞めたいと言い出しかねない。
しんじんをあまりきびしくしどうすると、かいしゃをやめたいといいだしかねない。
If a new employee is guided too strictly, they might say they want to quit the company.

It is also used to express having two or more functions, or holding two or more jobs simultaneously.

このカフェは、アートギャラリーも兼ねています。
このかふぇは、あーとぎゃらりーもかねています。
This café also serves as an art gallery.

彼女はプロのバレリーナであり、バレエのインストラクターも兼ねている。
かのじょはぷろのばれりーなであり、ばれえのいんすとらくたーもかねている。
She is a professional ballerina and also works as a ballet instructor.
