基本スクリプト⑬ー安楽死

今年（２０２４年）１１月、イギリスで安楽死を合法化する法案が下院で可決され、成立に向けて前進し話題になりました。安楽死はオランダやベルギー、カナダ等の国々で認められていますが、日本では合法化されていません。

安楽死は英語で「euthanasia」、発音は「ユーサネイジア」。「mercy killing」とも言うそうです。単語の意味が分からないと何も書けないという点で、１次試験のライティングでこれを直接聞く問題は出ないのではないかと個人的には思いますが、独特のキーワードがありますので、一回は確認しておいた方がよいテーマだと思います。

安楽死を合法化すべき理由
　→終末期（terminal disease/illness）疾患に苦しんでいる人にとって重要
　　①自分の身体や命について決定を下す権利、尊厳ある死の選択
　　②身体的痛みからの解放
　　③経済的負担

Q:  Should euthanasia be legalized in Japan？
Answer :
I think euthanasia should be legalized. I have three reasons to support my opinion.
Firstly, people should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies and lives, especially in cases of terminal illness. Euthanasia allows individuals to choose a dignified end.
Secondly, terminal illnesses often cause extreme physical pain. Euthanasia provides an option for patients who want to avoid prolonged suffering. Thirdly, terminal illnesses often require expensive treatments and long hospital stays, placing a financial burden on families. Euthanasia can help relieve this burden.
For these reasons, I believe euthanasia should be legalized.
日本語訳:
安楽死は合法化されるべきだと思います。その理由は3つあります。第一に、人々は自分の体や人生について、自分で決める権利を持つべきだと考えます。特に末期の病気の場合、安楽死は dignified（尊厳のある）方法で人生を終える選択肢を与えます。第二に、末期の病気はしばしば激しい身体的苦痛を伴います。安楽死は、長期間の苦痛を避けたいと望む患者に選択肢を提供します。第三に、末期の病気は高額な治療費や長期の入院が必要で、家族に経済的負担をかけることが多いです。安楽死はこの負担を軽減する助けになります。このような理由から、安楽死は合法化されるべきだと考えます。

面接対策用に安楽死合法化の危険性についても用意しておきます。

　・高額の医療費が家族に申し訳ないと安楽死を選ぶよう追い込まれる。
　・孤独な高齢者などが社会のため死んだほうが良いと圧力を感じてしまう。 

Patients with severe illness or disabilities might feel they have no choice but to choose euthanasia because of high medical costs or financial burden on their family.
Also there is a possibility that elderly people who are lonely may feel that they should end their lives for the sake of society.
This poses the risk of making choices about death that are not based on the true free will.
