How to evaluate online information critically?

Hello Eager Learners!
In this video, I’ll be sharing some tips on how to evaluate online information critically.
With the increase in the number of people who can now access the Internet and have the ability to share and distribute online information there are some advantages and disadvantages related to the use of online information.
Despite these improvements in accessing information online and the benefits that come with them there are still problems faced when gathering information online.
Not all online information is from a reliable source AND spreading fake and inaccurate news misleads people and can be an offence in many countries.
Therefore, before you spread and share any news you have received it is important to evaluate online information thoroughly to judge its quality, legitimacy and appropriateness first.
The spread of deliberate online falsehoods can hurt real people and communities.
Recognise that online information can be evaluated under the headings of Accuracy, Authority, Currency, Coverage, Objectivity, Relevance
In this video, we will be covering the three most important factors: Accuracy, Authority, Currency
First: ACCURACY
This is to find out how true the information is. Accuracy refers to the extent to which online information is correct and true. It is always important to check information particularly when statistics or facts are being discussed.
Second, AUTHORITY
Establishing how credible is the information largely depend on the source or Author. For example, a report on road safety from a well-known independent agency is more likely to be authoritative than a blog post from an individual.
There is a range of criteria that you can use to determine the authority of online information.
Third, CURRENCY
Currency refers to the extent to which online information is up-to-date and relevant. You should check when information on a website was published or last updated as this is a good indicator as to whether it can be used for research purposes. You should also investigate whether there have been more recent reports or articles that are more applicable to the research.
We have come to the end of this video.
But before that, let’s try to solve this question, together shall we?
Here’s the question:
Which of the following is NOT used to evaluate online information?
a. Accuracy
b. Authority
c. Speed
d. Relevancy
If your answer is C, you’ve guessed it right!
Speed is NOT one of the criteria to evaluate online information. We hope this short video is beneficial and useful for you. Remember to always Be Informed, Be Alert, Be A Tech-Ready Citizen!
