Weekly question #35 Who is the teacher you admired most?

This is my article about weekly question from 英語手帳 2024. The theme in July is "Learn from historical figures" （歴史上の人物から学ぶ）.




Weekly question: Who is the teacher you admired most?

I remembered two teachers who I admired during my school days. I would like to write about my teacher in 5th grade. It was during the years I lived in North Carolina, the United States, with my family. 

I was going to middle school at that time. My teacher, Mrs. A, always chose good books for our reading time. She read the books out loud for us and I was always enjoying that precious time. 

One of the books I remembered was the book by Roald Dahl. It was Matilda. The story was so fun and excited, but I also was surprised how Matilda read books so much. If you're interested in the story, refer to the following.

I became interested in reading books from then. Furthermore, I also read other books from Roald Dahl during my childhood. Thanks to Mrs. A, I learned about the wonderful author Roald Dahl. 

 There was a movie Matilda too. I remember watching it when it came out. It was in 1996 and it's a long time ago.

In my university years, I studied as an exchange student in Illinois. And I had a chance to visit North Carolina again. I was able to visit the middle school. Guess who I met? 
 
I was able to meet Mrs. A. She was still working there! I didn't expect to see her, so it was a big surprise for me. She also remembered me! It was a short time, but we enjoyed talking and looking back our past. 

It was my precious memory of my past experience. 

あなたが最も尊敬していた先生は誰ですか？

尊敬する先生は、2人思い浮かんだのですが、5年生の時の先生について、書いています。

父が仕事で、アメリカに転勤になり、家族でアメリカに住んでいた時期がありました。ノースカロライナ州で、現地校に通っていて、5年生の頃の担任のA先生についてです。

本読みの時間があって、A先生の選ぶ本が毎回楽しみで仕方ありませんでした。その中でも、今でも覚えているのが、ロアルド・ダール作の「マチルダ」です。ストーリーも面白かったのですが、主人公のマチルダがものすごい量の本を読んでたのが印象的でした。その影響か、ロアルド・ダール作の本にも興味を持つようになりました。全部は読めてないので、また、書きながら、いつか読もうって気になってます。

「マチルダ」は映画にもなっているので、洋書を読むのが大変でも、映像があると観やすいですよね。

イリノイ州へアメリカ留学も、大学生の頃にしていたのですが、その時に、ノースカロライナ州へ遊びにいく機会ができました。当時通っていた学校にも訪れて、なんとA先生と再会できたのです。

訪れた時、まさかお会いできると思っていなかったので、ほんとに驚きました。先生も私のことを覚えてくれていて、嬉しかったです。短い時間でしたが、二人で当時の記憶と思い出を語ったことは今でも覚えています。

6年生の夏に帰国して、大学生になった私が再びアメリカへ行った時に、出会えたことは、本当に貴重な思い出です。

素敵な本との出会いをくれたA先生。
大人になってから、自分のペースで読書を楽しんでいます。ニ胡のことも一段落したので、読書時間も増やせたら良いなと思います。
