マツダは、2001年8月31日、「RX-7」の特別限定車「タイプR バサーストR」を発売しました。限定500台です。

世界唯一のロータリースポーツ「RX-7」をベースに、よりスポーティさを強調した「タイプR バサーストR」ですが、グレード名に「R」を2つも入れて、気合が入っています。エンジンは654cc×2の1308cc水冷直列2ローターを大小2つのタービンで過給するタイプです。いわゆる「シーケンシャルツインターボ」です。13B-REW型（280ps、32.0kgm）です。トランスミッションは5MTのみでした。 新車価格は339.8万円とノーマル「タイプR」354.8万より15.0万円安いです！

なお、「バサースト」は、オーストラリアで開催された「バサースト12時間レース」においてRX-7が3年連続優勝（1992〜94年）を果たしたことを記念して1994年に採用して以来、RX-7の特別限定車のモデル名として継承されてきました。

Type R バサーストR専用装備は、
・車高調整式ダンパー、
・バサーストR デカール（Bピラー）、
・カーボン調パネル（メーターパネル／センターコンソール／センターパネル／運転席側インナードア）（マツダスピード製）
・カーボン製アルミシフトノブ＆アルミパーキングブレーキレバー （マツダスピード製）。

ボディカラーは、サンバーストイエロー（特別限定色）、ピュアホワイト、イノセントブルーマイカの3色のみです。

特別限定色のサンバーストイエローは今でも根強い人気でファンが多く相場は1000万超えです。

Based on the world's only rotary sports car, the RX-7, the Type R Bathurst R emphasizes sportiness, but with two "R "s in the grade name, the Type R Bathurst R has a lot of spirit. The new car price was 3,398,000 yen, 150,000 yen less than the normal "Type R" (3,548,000)!

Note that "Bathurst" has been the model name of the special limited edition RX-7 since it was adopted in 1994 to commemorate the RX-7's three consecutive victories (1992-94) at the Bathurst 12 Hour Race held in Australia

Exclusive equipment for the Type R Bathurst R includes: ride-height adjustable dampers, Bathurst R decal (B-pillar), carbon fiber panels (instrument panel, center console, center panel, driver side inner door) (Mazdaspeed), carbon aluminum shift knob and Aluminum shift knob and aluminum parking brake lever (Mazdaspeed)

Only three body colors are available: Sunburst Yellow (special limited edition), Pure White and Innocent Blue Mica
