Buffalo Springfield(バッファロー・スプリングフィールド)は、1966年4月に結成された。様々な音楽的要素を内包しながらも、Memberたちの際立った個性がぶつかり合いながらも、密度の高い、調和のとれた良質の作品を生んだ。その一方でMember間での対立(特にStephen StillsとNeil Youngの対立)が絶えず、1968年5月に解散した。活動期間は約2年と短く、大きな商業的成功も得られなかったが、1970年代以降のMusic Sceneの第一線で活躍する人材を輩出した。1997年にRockの殿堂入りを果たした。AlbumのReleaseに先立ち、First Single(Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing)をReleaseしたが、Los AngelesでTop 25まで上昇した以外に大した反響はなかった。1966年12月、First Single(Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing)も含むFirst Album(Debut Album)[Buffalo Springfield]をAtlantic Records傘下のAtco RecordsからRelease。1966年11月、LAのNight Clubの閉鎖に抗議してSunset Stripに集まった若者の群衆に対し、警察が治安目的で働いた暴力的行為を目撃したStillsは、彼のEpoch Makingとなる曲(For What It's Worth)を書いた。BandはすぐにWhisky a Go GoのStageでこの曲を演奏、数日後にはRecordingされ、Los AngelesのRadio局から流された。 この曲はBillboard Hot 100入りし、Atco Recordsは、First Album(Debut Album)収録の(Baby Don't Scold Me)をこの曲と入れ替え、First Albumを再Releaseした。

＊For What It's Worth:60年代のCounterculture(対抗文化)の高まりの中で発表され、反戦歌として多くの人々に広まった本作品であるが、実際はWest Hollywood/Sunset Stripの区域で起こった暴動に触発されてStephen Stillsが書いたものである。Buffalo SpringfieldはRecord Debut前の1966年5月から6月にかけて、Sunset StripにあるNight Club(Whisky a Go Go)のHouse Bandであった。当時Sunset StripにはRock Musicを中心とするClubがいくつもあった。若者たちが夜遅くまでひしめき合っていたことから、これを快く思わない地元の住民と企業が市当局に働きかけ、当局は夜10時を門限とする夜間外出禁止の措置をとった。1966年11月12日の夜、Clubのひとつ(Pandora's Box)の周辺で1000人規模のデモ集会が開かれ、警官隊と衝突。デモに参加した若者の中にはJack NicholsonとPeter Fondaも含まれており、彼らもこのとき警官に捕縛された。結果(Pandora's Box )は閉鎖に追い込まれた、Stillsは抗議の意味を込めて本作品を書き、同年12月5日にLos AngelesのColumbia Square StudiosでRecordingを行った。12月23日、Single A面として発表(1967年1月発表とする説もあり)B面はNeil Youngが作詞作曲しRichie FurayがLead Vocalをとった(Do I Have to Come Right Out and Say It)1967年3月25日から4月1日にかけてBillboard Hot 100で2週連続7位を記録し、最終的に100万枚を売り、Gold Discに輝いた。1966年12月に出たFirst Album[Buffalo Springfield]が1967年3月に再発されるが、再発盤は(Baby Don't Scold Me)が[For What It's Worth]に置き換えられた。
