“not a little”とは？『シェヘラザーデの千二夜の物語』を題材に考える

Having had occasion, lately, in the course of some Oriental investigations, to consult the Tellmenow Isitsoornot, a work which (like the Zohar of Simeon Jochaides) is scarcely known at all, even in Europe; and which has never been quoted, to my knowledge, by any American—if we except, perhaps, the author of the “Curiosities of American Literature”;—having had occasion, I say, to turn over some pages of the first-mentioned very remarkable work, I was not a little astonished to discover that the literary world has hitherto been strangely in error respecting the fate of the vizier’s daughter, Scheherazade, as that fate is depicted in the “Arabian Nights”; and that the denouement there given, if not altogether inaccurate, as far as it goes, is at least to blame in not having gone very much farther.

問題はnot a littleの箇所です。構文だけを見れば２つの解釈が可能であり、今回はこのようなnot a littleに関連する二通りの解釈と、どちらに絞るべきかの判断方法をご紹介します。

この英文はエドガー・アラン・ポーによる『シェヘラザーデの千二夜の物語』からの引用ですが、not a littleの何が問題かをまず紹介します。

そもそもここでいうa littleは、以下に上げる英文と同じように「少し」を表す副詞です。

I was a little tired.

ここで、上記の英文を

I was not a little tired.

と修正した場合でも、今回の題材と同じ問題が成立し得ます。どういうことかというと、英語ではminimizers vs diminishersの区別があります。いまいちこれだけだとわかりづらいので、それぞれ解説していきます。以下の英文を読んでみてください。

1. He didn't drink a drop of beer.
2. He didn't read a book.

上記の英文で、a drop of beer, a bookはそれぞれ「一滴も」「一冊も」のようなニュアンスを持ちます。つまり、「一滴」「一冊」という最小単位を否定して「ビールは飲んでいない」「本を読んでいない」と表現しているわけです。このように、否定で使われる最小単位をminimizersと呼ばれています。(Bolinger (1972), Horn (2001)) これと対になるものがdiminishersです。diminishersとは何かというと、minizersが最小単位を用いて「少しも」と否定するのに対し、最小単位を否定することで、「少しではない」と肯定的な意味を強調するという役割を持ちます。どういうことかというと、

As it may be supposed, I was not a little tired before my journey was half over; I therefore was glad when the coach stopped for a few hours

a littleは「少し」ということですが、この英文において「少しも疲れていなかった」と解釈すると、なぜ後半部分でコーチが休憩を挟んだことを喜んだのか理由がつきません。なのでここでは、「少し」というのを否定して、「かなり」と解釈した方が自然です。例えば以下はどうでしょうか？

I am truly suprised, and not a little concerned that the other reviewers, in the main, failed to detect the Hardy Boys/ Tarzan self inflating just plain nonsense in these pages.

これもnot a little concernedを、not concerned at allと解釈するとtruly surprisedと反対の意味になり、文の意味が不自然になってしまいます。(順接のandもここでは根拠になります)

ですが、以下はどうですか？

Thomas took his place in front of the railing, not a little surprised to find every chair and bench in the viewing section occupied, a few women among the men.

舞台は裁判所です。要点としては、

・Thomas氏がevery chair and bench in the viewing section occupiedを想定し得たか？
・例えば、この裁判が世間の注目を集めていて、「席が埋まるのも当然であろう」と想定できるか？
・それともThomas氏が事前に想定し得る他の情報を得ていたか？

という点が挙げられます。

同じ要領で、題材にあるポーの作品からの引用を解いていきます。

ここではnot a littleは以下の点から「かなり」と訳すことができます。まずこの文章は

その1 Having had occasion,…Curiosities of American Literature”; →「記憶では、その作品を引用した(＝知っている)のはアメリカ文学の専門家ぐらい」という表現で、自分が調べる機会のあった作品が無名であることを表している

その2 having had occasion, I say, to turn over some pages of the first—mentioned very remarkable work→その作品の数ページを読む機会があった→転じて、その作品の数ページを読んでみたら…

という文意で導入されていますが、これだけではnot a littleを判断根拠として弱すぎます。というか、文章として論理構成が足りなすぎることから、以下の仮定を用意します。

1. AだからB というのが通常の分だが、今回は、XだからB のようになっている。
2. 通常文章というのは繋がりがあるものなので、Xに必ずBに関連する何かがあるはず

上記から、以下のことを踏まえてさらに深掘りします。

1a 前半二つの分詞構文は、the fate of the vizier’s daughter, Scheherazadeに関することではない。
2a だが、それなら(2)からTellmenow Isitsoornotがthe fate of the vizier’s daughter, Scheherazadeと関係しているのではないか

2aの仮説を検証するために、Tellmenow Isitsoornotについて調べると以下のことがわかりました。

・Tellmenow Isitsoornot によると、アラビアンナイトとも呼ばれる有名な作品『千夜一夜物語』 の物語には続きがある
・題材の英文の引用元である著書では、その物語の続き ということに因んでシェヘラザーデの千二夜の物語と名付けられている(https://literature.fandom.com/wiki/The_Thousand-and-Second_Tale_of_Scheherazadeにおいても同)

とすると、題材である英文の意味は

・Tellmenow Isitsoornotという無名の作品を読んでみたら
・Scheherazadeという人の語った物語は、千夜一夜物語でも取り扱われているのに、ちゃんと物語が書かれていない。(asを逆接と解釈した方が意味的に自然。同時性を表すasや、容態のasの読みは、文の意味、必要性や文法的要因から除外される)

とすると、このnot a littleは「①千夜一夜物語のような有名な作品でも取り扱われているのに、②今まで物語がちゃんと書かれていなかった」において

① 千夜一夜物語のような有名な、クラシックなものにはちゃんと物語が書かれているだろうという想定
② 1の想定を裏切り、今まで物語が正しく書かれてこなかった という「想定を裏切る」内容

から、「とても」と解釈するのが妥当かと思います。

ちなみに、あくまでこのTellmenow Isitsoornot というのは同著者のポーが用意したものであり、ポーはこのような導入方法を利用して「まだ知られていない(恐らくポーが作り上げた？)千二夜物語」をテーマにシェヘラザーデの千二夜物語という一つの本を書いているのだと思われます。
