第5回 bento (弁当)
2010年代に、弁当(bento)という単語が海外で急速に広まりました。2020年のコロナ禍において、携帯食に注目が集まったことも追い風になったと言われています。日本の食文化の魅力が凝縮されているbentoについて英語で読んでいきましょう。
The Japanese word “bento” has become widely known overseas. A bento is typically a portable meal packed in a compartmentalized box. While portable meals, like boxed lunches, exist all over the world, Japan’s bentos have evolved in a unique way.
They have become especially popular in France, and the word “bento” actually appears in both English and French dictionaries. So, what makes bentos so widely accepted abroad?
味や栄養バランスとともに、日本の食文化で重要視されることは?
Behind the spread of bento culture abroad lies Japan’s unique food culture. Focus is placed not only on nutritional balance and flavor but also on visual appeal, including the use of vibrant colors. In recent years, kyara-ben, or character bentos that feature characters from popular culture, have gained attention on social media. The portable meals have become a unique, universal form of artistic expression and even a means of communication.
弁当には、日本文化のどんな特徴が反映されていますか?
Bentos are made by packing different foods into a particular section inside a small box. The different compartments make it easy to include foods and flavors from different cultures. In fact, blending local and foreign customs is a key part of Japanese culture. Also, placing various foods together allows the bento maker to express individuality. This flexibility is one reason why bento culture has spread across the globe.
Bentos are more than just portable meals; they are embraced worldwide for their visual appeal, flavor combinations, nutritional balance, versatility, and their role as a communication tool.
