それなりにたくさんの音楽を聴いてきたので、感謝の言葉を伝えたくなった自分（＃８）

Al Stewartに感謝。学生時代、AMラジオのFENを
よく聴いていた。周波数は810。今はAFNという
らしいが、その当時は、在日アメリカ軍向けの
放送とは知らずに、毎夜、聴いていた。
私にとって、海外のポップスを知る情報源だった。
 
そんなある日、流れてきたのがアル・スチュワート
の「Year of the Cat」だ。一度聴いただけで
好きになり、頭から離れなくなった。ラジオDJが
ネイティブ・アメリカンなので、アーティスト名を
把握するまでに時間が掛かったが、曲タイトルは
聞き取れたのでレコードショップの店長に伝える
と、この曲のシングルＥＰを探し出してくれた。
 
メディアがアナログ盤からＣＤに移行して以降、
この曲タイトルと同名のフルアルバムも購入した。
安い家賃でひとり暮らしを始めたばかりの頃だ。
家にテレビはなかったが、ＣＤプレーヤーだけは
ローンで買っていた。「Year of the Cat」の
ゴージャスなアレンジで空腹感を満たしていた。
 
後半のアルトサックスのソロを聴くたび、涙が
溢れそうになる。今の私では幸せにすることが
 できないと感じ、人を傷つけてしまった日の事
をいつも思い出すからだ。この曲を聴くたびに、
今日よりも優しい人になれる気がする。

Thanks to Al Stewart. During my student days, I often listened to AM radio on FEN. The frequency was 810. It seems it's called AFN now, but back then, I didn't realize it was a broadcast for the American military in Japan and listened to it every night. It was my source of information on overseas pop music. One day, Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" played. I fell in love with it after just one listen and couldn't get it out of my head. Since the radio DJ was a Native American, it took me some time to figure out the artist's name, but I could catch the song title. When I told the record shop owner about it, he found me the single EP of the song.

As media transitioned from analog records to CDs, I also bought the full album of the same title as the song. It was when I had just started living alone on a cheap rent. I didn't have a TV at home, but I had bought a CD player on loan. The gorgeous arrangement of "Year of the Cat" filled my hunger.

Every time I listen to the alto sax solo in the latter half, tears almost flow. It always reminds me of the day when I couldn't make someone happy and ended up hurting them, because I felt I couldn't make them happy with the current me. Every time I listen to this song, I feel like I can become a kinder person than I am today.
