それなりにたくさんの音楽を聴いてきたので、感謝の言葉を伝えたくなった自分（＃２）
BAY CITY ROLLERSに感謝。そういえば、何が
きっかけで２歳上の姉が深夜のラジオにハマっ
たのか把握していないが、彼らの楽曲が流れる
といつも嬉しそうにしていた記憶が強い。
そのラジオを通じて私が初めて聴いた楽曲は
「Saturday Night」だった。
サビで曲タイトルが連呼されるので、当時、
小学４年生の私が英語がわからないといっても、
さすがにこのサビ部分は聴きとれた。最初の印象
は、ポップ過ぎて気恥ずかしさを感じていたが、
ただ、聴く人を楽しませる意図を感じたりもして、
男性アイドルの曲だから聴かない、といった偏屈な
態度にはなれなかった。その後、この煮え切らない
印象は「I Only Want to Be with You」のリリースで
一変する。
レスリー・マッコーエンの伸びやかなヴォーカルと
ほかのメンバーによる美しいコーラスでどんどん
引き込んでいく。王道のコード進行も心地よく、
後半のドラマチックなアレンジも秀逸だ。
メンバーそれぞれの歌唱力の高さに感動し、コー
ラスワークやアレンジの華やかさも印象深い。
その後も次々とリスナーをハッピー気分にさせる
楽曲をリリース。今、聴いても全く色褪せない。
音楽は人を元気にする効能があることをベイ・
シティ・ローラーズに教えてもらった。
ちなみに、小学生だった私が彼らを知ることにより、
スコットランドという国の存在と、イギリスが４つ
の国と地域が集まった連合王国であることを知る
きっかけにもなった。

Thanks to BAY CITY ROLLERS. Come to think of it, I don't know what got my sister, who is two years older than me, hooked on late-night radio, but I have strong memories of how happy she seemed whenever their songs played. The first song I ever heard on that radio was "Saturday Night."
Because the song title is repeated in the chorus, even though I was a fourth grader who didn't understand English, I could catch the chorus part. My initial impression was that it was so pop that I felt a bit embarrassed, but I also felt an intention to entertain the listener, so I couldn't take a stubborn attitude like "I won't listen to boy idol songs." After that, this hesitant impression completely changed with the release of "I Only Want to Be with You."
Leslie McKeown's soaring vocals and the beautiful chorus by the other members kept pulling me in. The classic chord progression was pleasant, and the dramatic arrangement in the second half was also superb.
I was moved by each member's high singing ability, and the gorgeousness of the chorus work and arrangement was also impressive. They continued to release songs that made listeners feel happy one after another. Even now, their songs haven't faded at all. BAY CITY ROLLERS taught me that music has the power to uplift people.
By the way, knowing them as an elementary school student was also the reason I learned about the existence of a country called Scotland and that the United Kingdom is a union of four countries and regions. Thank you, BAY CITY ROLLERS. (End)
