Transforming to sanctuary city for pets
※English only
Have you ever looked into the eyes of a puppy deprived of their joy in the dark?
This year, New York takes a big change to wipe away such cruelty with a transformative new law.
The puppy mill pipeline law will come into force, banning the sale of dogs, cats, rabbits in pet shops across the state.
Imagine, hundreds of dogs are living in an ammonia-filled room that requires our workers to conduct their operation with a gas mask day after day.
Imagine, hundreds of dogs confined to rusty wire cages, wallowing in their own waste, in various states of mental and physical disrepair. Puppy mills see dogs as just profit-making machines.
Puppy mills often attach nice-sounding names to their facilities to give the appearance of quality care, like ‘’Almost Heaven’’.
It is estimated there are over 10,000 puppy mills in the nation. Many pet’s parents don’t notice their new family member is from Puppy Mill. Many times we get to know when their beloved pet looks ill. NY is one of the biggest markets in the pet industry. So a lot of puppies are sold in these shops.
The first law to ban "puppy mills" in the U.S. was enacted in California in 2017.
Later, more states followed California: Maryland, Washington, New York, Maine, Illinois and Oregon.
Despite the growing awareness of animal welfare, some may still think it’s unrelated to them.
However, I want more people to recognize the power these animals possess.
Animals have a tremendous impact, especially as emotional support for humans.
Over the past 10 years, NIH has partnered with the Mars Corporation’s WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition to uncover the Power of Pets.
According to the studies, spending time with animals can lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, and reduce blood pressure, helping people be more relaxed.
Who can benefit from this?
The number of suicides among U.S. active-duty and retired veterans is said to be over four times that of combat fatalities, making it a serious issue in the country.
Fortunately, in the United States, there is a program called "Pets and Vets".
That matches specially trained dogs with veterans suffering from PTSD.
Through this program, suitable dogs are paired with veterans and have become not just a source of emotional support but an integral part of their new lives.
A veteran saying,
"If it weren’t for this dog, I might not be here today. She is my savior."
Due to these positive effects, dogs are also working in hospitals, nursing homes, and even prisons around the world.
If you want to have a new puppy as a family, don’t buy it online. See their parents. We need to have eyes to choose ethical breeders. Together, we can transform New York into a sanctuary city for pets, a place where the welfare of our four-legged friends is held as sacred as our own.
What I want you to remember is only one thing.
Pets are family.
not tools.
They live just like humans.
They are family.
