#MyJourney #25卒 M.K.
Hello. I’m M.K from the intercultural communication course. I would like to write about my studying abroad experience and university life so far.
🧑🎓How I met Professor John
When I was in the first year, he was my teacher for a compulsory subject. Even at that time, everything was online because of COVID-19, he was welcoming and helped us with our classes and assignments. He also helped me with assignments from other classes and taught me English as well. When I was in the third year, his seminar was one of my interests and I’ve already known him since my first year. So, I decided to join his seminar.
🌍Why I decided to go to study abroad
First of all, one of my reasons is that I’ve always been fascinated by the aviation industry since I was little. That is why I chose to become an English major at university. I was motivated to study English and communication. At that time, I discovered that I wanted to work as a cabin crew for an international aviation company and travel all over the world. I researched what should I do at university to achieve my dream and found that studying abroad and working experience in the service industry would be very useful. That’s why I decided to go to an overseas university as an exchange student.
🇦🇺What I learned from my studying abroad experience
👩🎓University
I studied at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia for 9 months. I chose Deakin because it was one of the partner universities of Tsuda. Deakin University has many courses and international students from different cultures and countries. I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to meet new people and learn new cultures. At Deakin, I took many communication and media classes because they were related to my major. Even though I took entry level courses, everything was so difficult for me, especially writing English essays and giving presentations.
The local and international students there were really nice and kind to me, they helped me with my studies. The most memorable class was a video-making class, in which we learned how to make effective YouTube videos. Some students were professional, they ignited my passion for making travel videos someday.
💖Cheerleading team
I also joined a cheerleading team at Deakin. That was really fun but a bit difficult in the beginning. The dancing part was not a big problem, I really practiced hard … the difficult part was that all the members were local students and my English was not good enough. Sometimes, I wished I could speak English more fluently… However, the team members were so nice. I really appreciated them for letting me join the Deakin team even though I was a short-term exchange student. I had the opportunity to join three competitions and we won a medal in all of them. The last competition was for an Australian national competition and we won the third prize. I was so proud of myself and our team. This was an unforgettable experience in my life.
🍣Part time job
For my part-time job experience in Australia, I worked at a sushi restaurant. I was so surprised that I was the only one who could speak Japanese even though it was a Japanese restaurant. Most of all staffers were international university students and there were also a few local high school students. For me, my workplace was really comfortable because almost everyone was from abroad who came to Australia to study or on a working holiday.
It was a great opportunity for me to get a job abroad and have kind some work experience. I was grateful that I had colleagues who I could talk to when I had troubles.
✈️My future
It’s hard to describe everything in this blog because I have so many good memories from Melbourne.
I believe that everything that I have done in the past few years both abroad and at home was meaningful. I appreciate my family, friends, and teachers who I’ve met. I will continue to try my best to achieve my dream of becoming a cabin crew at an international airline. But before that, I must focus on my graduation research project and study English more.
