What is Translation Studies?     

     Hi everyone, this is Asahi. I am studying Translation Studies as my minor (or hobby?). This year, I will introduce it to spread awareness of this academic area and review my learning! (and to maintain my English skill!)

     Translation Studies (翻訳研究, 翻訳学, トランスレーションスタディーズ) is actually really interesting (at least for me), but what is it?
     As the name suggests, Translation Studies is studying translation. What do you imagine when you hear the word, "translation"?

     As a student of Tsuda, I first imagine translating English to Japanese and vice versa. I guess you think in the same way too?
     However, translation is not just an exchange of language. Instead, it is an exchange of culture, and translation is everywhere. Here and there.

     Let me give an example. Do you know California rolls?

     The most famous American sushi!! Beautiful! (I have not tried it before though…)

     When Japanese sushi was first taken to California, people did not like the sushi mainly because they have no practice of eating seaweed. What chefs did to improve this problem was hiding seaweed inside of sushi and putting rice outside. This is the origin of California rolls, and sushi is accepted there in this way.
     
     I think the story is a good example of translation. Chefs had to learn the target culture (in this case, the U.S.) to get accepted for their sushi and succeeded in their new place California. They literally translated their sushi from Japanese style to American style as we translate English text to Japanese text.

     Translation and Translation Studies are intercultural communication! Next time, I will focus on "equivalence" (等価). I wish I could use sushi as an example again because it is easy for Japanese students to understand.
