The majority of the match might have been boring. However, the starting lineup announcement and Manchester United's dramatic comeback just before the final whistle were so extraordinary that they seemed like the work of an invisible hand of fate. First, United’s manager Amorim left forwards Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out of even the substitutes' bench. Both players are homegrown talents from United’s academy. Regardless of the result, this decision would undoubtedly spark discussions in the weeks to come. United faced trouble early on when midfielder Mason Mount had to be substituted due to injury in the first half. Then, their weakness in aerial battles was exposed as they conceded a goal from a well-executed corner kick. Until two minutes before full time, United showed no signs of scoring. But then! At that crucial moment! A misplaced pass by Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes led to United’s Amad Diallo being fouled in the penalty area, earning a penalty kick. Matheus Nunes, though registered as a midfielder, was unexpectedly deployed as a right-back in this match due to City’s lack of defensive options. He had managed to hold his unfamiliar position for 88 minutes—until this mistake.And then! With the score tied, just two minutes later, Amad Diallo made a diagonal run that seemed to mock City’s defense. Receiving the ball and breaking through, he controlled the bouncing ball, dribbled past the goalkeeper, and scored a stunning goal to complete United’s comeback! It was an artistic finish that secured victory. Manager Amorim’s reputation is now soaring sky-high.
Other Games
Liverpool had to play with a numerical disadvantage for 75 minutes after left-back Andrew Robertson was sent off in the first half. Despite being behind twice, they managed to draw against Fulham.
Crystal Palace has been performing well since midfielder Daichi Kamada has been left out of the starting lineup. Nottingham Forest also pulled off a comeback against Aston Villa, scoring two goals in the last three minutes after being down in the Manchester derby this week.
Tottenham completely dominated Southampton, leading 5-0 by halftime. Forward Son Heung-min was particularly impressive, as he can be effective in any position up front, but the left side seems to be his strongest area.
My favorite goalkeeper in the Premier League is Lucas Fabianski from West Ham, and he had an outstanding performance this week with several brilliant saves. Although the match ended in a 1-1 draw, that goal he conceded was a no-chance situation for him.
