My Favourite Books （愛読書）

If I am asked what my favorite books are, which means the books I have kept for a long time and reread many times, I have to say that I have no such books. I have hardly read the same book again. Or rather, when I finish reading a book, I always have the urge to read a new one. So, before I finish the book I am reading, I always start looking for a new one. And it motivates me to finish the book I am now reading as soon as possible.
But I have a couple of writers whom I never forget. I used to read a lot of their works when I was at college. In particular, I loved the works by Ryotaro Shiba, Seicho Matsumoto and Saburo Shiroyama. They taught me how fun it is to read books.
I learnt the way I live through Ryotaro’s books. His books present a lot of great figures such as Ryoma Sakamoto, Kukai, Kazutoyo Yamauchi, and Tsuginosuke Kawai. Among them is the work of Shinpai Eto which I liked the most.
I also learnt from Seicho how exciting the mysteries were. His works were always so thrilling that I could not stop reading them until I finished reading them to the end. Among a lot of his books was the work about the crash of Japan Airlines flight 301, a true accident, which thrilled me the most. Since I had read it, I was hooked on his books.
Recently, I do not have such writers. But I am now very interested in books written by Europeans. It begins since I read Les Miserable, a French novel. And I am now trying to read books more than before. In particular, from the end of February, I will have more time to read books than before. I look forward to finding my favourite books and writers who will addict me.
長い間手元に置いて何度も読み返しているお気に入りの本があるかと問われれば、そんな本はありませんと答えざるを得えません。ボクは、同じ本を読み返すことがほとんどありません。それより、一つの本を読み終わると、いつも新しい本を読みたくなるのです。だから、今読んでいる本を読み終える前に、いつも新しい本を探し始めます。そして、それが、今読んでいる本を一刻も早く読み終えようという気にさせます。
でも、ボクにも忘れられない作家さんが数人います。学生時代は、彼らの作品をたくさん読んだものです。なかでも、司馬遼太郎、松本清張、城山三郎が大好きでした。彼らのおかげで、本を読む楽しさを知りました。
司馬さんの本には、坂本龍馬、空海、山内一豊、河井継之助など多くの偉人が登場し、人の生き様を学びました。中でも一番気に入ったのは江藤新平に関する作品です。
清張さんからは、ミステリーの面白さを学びました。清張さんの作品はいつもスリリングで、読み終えないと止められませんでした。中でも、日本航空301便墜落事故を扱った作品が一番わくわくしました。それを読んで以来、清張さんの作品の虜になりました。
最近はそういう作家さんがいません。『レ・ミゼラブル』を読んで以来、欧州の人の作品に興味があります。そして、以前以上に本を読むようにしています。特に2月末からは、本を読む時間が増えます。愛読書やはまる作家さんが見つかるといいのですが。
