Valentine/Barentai （バレンタイン/ばれんたい）
The 14th of February was Valentine's Day. It was the day on which the high-end chocolates sold the most in a year. A lot of Japanese women bought them to celebrate the day. In the past, they used to buy them for their fiances or boyfriends. In addition, they used to buy them for male colleagues at work.
But this year, most of them bought them for their own gifts. And they seemed to pay about 10,000 yen for them that day. Chocolates are helpful in the cold winter. They have helped to warm my body and heal my heart in the cold winter.
While Japan was celebrating the day calmly, I found something strange outside Japan. I found on the internet that a US Air Force plane, which is used for sensitive missions, flew to Moscow. I do not know why, but it must have been for a special mission about the Russian invasion into Ukraine. Donald Trump, the US President, is in a hurry to end the invasion and is trying a number of things. He seemed to send the plane to Moscow as a part of this. He might have sent it, expecting that it would not come to light (we say it ‘Barentai’ in a Japanese dialect in Kyushu, which has a close pronunciation to Valentine). But it was wrong, it immediately came to light. In any case, I wish that he would be able to end it, though I am a bit skeptical of what he is doing to end the invasion.
I have seen the two opposite events on the 14th of February this year. One is the popular Valentine’s day, which heals the hearts of people. The other is a covert operation by the US government, expecting that it would not be revealed (‘Barentai’). But it was a failure.
2月14日はバレンタインデーでした。高級チョコレートが1年で最も売れた日です。多くの日本人女性がこの日を祝うためにチョコレートを買いました。昔は、婚約者やボーイフレンドに贈るのが一般的でした。また、職場の男性の同僚に贈ることもありました。
でも、今年はほとんどの女性が自分へのプレゼントとして購入しました。しかも、1万円もです。寒い冬にはチョコレートが助けになります。体を温め、心を癒してくれます。
日本では、この日を穏やかに祝っている一方、日本の外で不思議なことが起こりました。機密任務に使われる米空軍機がモスクワに飛んだのです。理由はわかりませんが、ロシアのウクライナ侵攻に関する特別任務のためだと思われます。トランプ米大統領は侵攻の終結を急ぎ、いろいろトライしています。 その一環で、モスクワに空軍機を送ったようです。このことは明るみにでない（九州の方言で「ばれんたい」と言い、「バレンタイン」と発音が近いです。）と期待したのでしょうが、間違いでした。すぐに明らかになりました。いずれにせよ、トランプ氏のやり方には懐疑的ですが、ロシアによる侵攻を終わらせてほしいです。
今年の2月14日は、正反対の2つの出来事がありました。ひとつは、バレンタインデーで、心を癒されました。その一方で、アメリカ政府による秘密作戦がありました。「ばれんたい」と期待したのでしょうが、失敗でした。
