October 30, 2024: 2024 General Election （総選挙）

The 2024 general election was held on October 27. The result was more than what I expected. The ruling parties lost big, and lost the majority of seats in the Diet. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is still the largest in terms of seats. But they no longer have the majority. Nor do any other parties. Probably, it is the first time since 30 years ago that the LDP is at loss. Back then, the LDP formed a coalition with two other parties to keep in power.
Likewise, all the parties, in particular, the LDP, have to meet and discuss with other parties to pass bills. The LDP is no longer able to do as they want. It means that LDP need a lot of efforts to get support from other parties. I do not know if the current LDP has the skills to do so. Otherwise, they will plunge Japan into chaos. In any case, it all depends on the LDP.
The election gave another surprise to me. My daughter went to a poll station to vote. It must have been the second time for her to go to vote since she had gotten the right to vote. She had never had any interest in elections before. But this election was different. In her constituency, a parachute candidate was against another one who had worked hard for the constituency for a long time. She went to a polling station to vote for the latter. She did not want to see the former win against the latter. She surprised me much more than the big loss of the LDP.

　2024年総選挙が10月27日に行われました。 結果は予想以上でした。与党が大敗し、過半数を失いました。それでも、自民党が最大議席を維持しています。自民党も過半数をもっていませんが、他党も持っていません。自民党がこのような状況に陥るのは、おそらく30年ぶりです。当時、自民党は政権を維持するために他の2つの政党と連立を組みました。
　今回も同様に、すべての政党、特に自民党が、法案を通すために他の政党と向き合い、議論しなければなりません。自民党はもはや好き勝手できなくなり、他党の支持を得るために必死に汗をかかねばなりません。今の自民党にそれができるかどうかはわかりませんが、そうでなければ、日本を混乱に陥れてしまうことになります。なにはともあれ、すべては自民党次第です。
　今回の選挙で別に驚かされたことがありました。娘が投票に行ったのです。投票に行くのは、選挙権を得て以来、2度目のはずです。それまで選挙に関心を持ったことはなかったのですが、今回の選挙は違いました。娘の選挙区では、落下傘候補が、長い間選挙区のために懸命に働いてきた別の候補と対決していました。娘は、後者に投票にいったようです。前者に勝たせたくなかったようです。自民党の大敗よりも、こちらのほうが驚きでした。
