Haircut （散髪）

The other day, I went to my regular barbershop to have my hair cut. I thought that it would be the first time in 2 months. But as soon as I went into the shop, I was told out loud by my regular barber that it was the first time in three months. I was surprised to hear it, and said, 'It's been two months, hasn't it?'. Then, he said, ‘No, you're wrong. It has been three months since your last visit. It was last November that you last came here. I have kept a record of your visits.’ Then, I admitted that I was wrong. That sure was that his record was right.
Then, he began to cut my hair, saying that my hair had grown too long. And we chatted a lot as usual. First, we talked about the hay fever. He has already suffered from and struggled with it. Spring, the peak season for the fever, was hell for him, and he was tired of fighting with it. It is so serious that he needs medicine to take care of it. He knows that it is better to see a doctor and have him or her prescribe medicine. But he cannot afford to go there and has to use an over-the-counter one instead.
Hearing about it, I was aware that I might be suffering from it. I am not as serious as he is. But sometimes, I have a mild runny nose and a sore throat, which may be a sign of me catching the fever. I have taken sweets several times a day but to no avail. I am also afraid that I may have suffered from it. It is still February and too early to suffer from it.
Then, we talked about the accident of a lorry falling into a big hole on a street in my neighbouring town. It shocked both of us. Furthermore, we talked about the origin of the town's name, Yashio, which consists of 2 Kanji letters, Ya and Shio. The last letter, Shio, means seawater and the letter seems to come from the fact that the area around the town had been a sea about two millennia ago.
We chatted a lot for about an hour, and I refreshed, as usual.

先日、いつもの散髪屋に髪を切りに行きました。2ヶ月ぶりだと思っていたのですが、店に入るなり、いつも髪を切ってもらっている人に大声で「3ヶ月ぶりです。」と言われました。それにびっくりして、「2カ月ぶりじゃないの？」と返したら、「いや、違います。前回の来店は、去年の11月なので、3カ月ぶりです。チャンと記録をしてるのだから」と反論されました。確かに自分が間違っていたので、それを認めました。
それから、髪が伸びすぎていると言われながら、髪を切ってもらいました。その間、いつものようにたくさん話をしました。最初の話題は、花粉症です。理容師さんは、もう花粉症にかかり、苦しんでいました。花粉症のピークシーズンである春は、彼にとって地獄です。花粉症との戦いにうんざりしていました。彼の花粉症は深刻で、薬を飲まないと治らないようです。医者に診てもらい、薬を処方してもらうのが一番いいのは分かっているのですが、病院に行く余裕がなく、市販の薬を使うしかないようです。
その話を聞いて、自分もそうかもしれないと思いました。彼ほど深刻ではありませんが、花粉症の前兆とみられる鼻水と喉の痛みがあります。一日に数回、飴をなめていますが、効果はありません。自分も花粉症になったのではないかと、心配です。まだ2月で、かかるには早すぎです。
つぎに、隣町の道路が陥没し、トラックが転落した事故の話をしました。二人ともショックでした。さらに、八潮という町の名前の由来についても話しました。最後の漢字の「潮」は海水を意味するのですが、約2千年前は、この町の周辺が海だったことに由来しているようです。
いつものようにたくさん話をし、リフレッシュできました。
