【英語エッセイ】Cornered At All Angles Yet Spared(九死に一生)
Have you tried reassuring yourself that your mantra works? Well, I did the best that I could. However, that got tried and tested on that uneventful day of December 16, 2021. Throughout the day, I went to work as usual, not minding about that foreboding moment of the skies and the surrounding area. Still thinking that this thing was within my capability to handle, and that I could withstand it. My mantra. An act of bravado I told myself.
The moment of truth soon had its way as I headed homeward. While on my way home, it rained hard, even harder, making it quite difficult for me to maneuver my motorbike since the visor of my helmet got misty with the constant spattering of the rain against it. It went moist, making me unable to see clearly. It worsened due to total blackout right after the typhoon struck.
I was drenched with the pouring rain that moment. However, I no longer cared at all. I was just determined to be home and rest. Yet something happened all of a sudden. Oh my goodness! I thought I would really be home forever. A galvanized iron sheet which got blown by the wind suddenly headed towards my motorbike which, if accidentally struck me, would cut my body in half, making me rest in peace amidst the storm. Luckily, I was able to swerve the handlebar of my motorbike quickly, making me able to miss the course of the sharp blade. Relieved that my life was spared.
I thought nothing more life-threatening would happen any longer. However, as I turned left from the main road, I was stunned since the power line posts along with the big trees were blocking my way. It seemed impossible for me to pass through. Seeing all these blockages, I retreated and looked for other routes where I could reach home in no time. And so I did. As I turned left on the second route, it was to no avail since it went just the same scenario. As I opted for the third route, I was quite relieved seeing that there were just a few blockages as I headed off. Unfortunately, right on that spot homebound, the sight was unbearable. Already impassable. So, I took shelter in the meantime at a house nearby. However, a little while later, I went off.
Still holding on to hope against hope. Then, suddenly I saw a certain path. I reckoned that it could directly lead me home minutes from now. So, without a doubt I went through it. As I went past it, I realized that it was heading uphill. So, I headed down the hillside, traversing back. Off I went to the route I passed through some minutes ago. Upon reaching the spot, to my surprise, that route turned out impassable since lots of trees had already fallen. No turning back. Already completely cornered.
With the aid of the motorbike’s headlight, I was able to see clearly. So I headed backwards and I saw a clearing, a spacious lot, an area for making hollow blocks as I saw a pile of them which formed like a wall. Though wet, tired, and weary, I was happy and relieved knowing that I could lean on the wall of hollow blocks while protecting myself from further devastation caused by the strong winds and heavy rain. And so it was.
I stood there for an hour, yet I soon got impatient. so I decided to leave my motorbike. Before doing so, I stationed it in a certain spot near a shed which looked like a small hut just for it to be preserved the next day. However, as I was about to go, an opening from the shed suddenly opened. I saw a blinding light coming out from it. I heard a man calling out. I responded immediately and briefly introduced myself. He immediately welcomed me into his humble abode, which enabled me to feel a sense of relief.
While at the shed, my best friend suddenly chatted with me out of the blue. He actually lives quite near the area where I lived. He asked me how I had been, and I truthfully replied. I told him that I was stuck in a particular area, not quite far from home. He began asking for further details about my current location, of which I replied specifically. I ended the conversation by assuring him not to worry further since I could just go back home in no time when this unlikely situation would soon be over.
About 20 minutes later, I saw a beam of light outside the shed. It seemed to come closer. I heard a voice of a man saying evening greetings. As I opened the door, I was surprised that it was my best friend. Really surprised yet relieved to see him. He took with him a raincoat and an umbrella and invited me to come with him immediately. It was so kind of him to do that. Without any further ado, off we went. As we arrived at his home at about 12 midnight, he immediately told me to change my clothes and to stay for the night till the morning comes. Whew! It was a six-hour ordeal. I was able to rest my head at last. Though not yet home, I felt like I was already home.
Almost cornered at all angles, yet spared. However, I learned an important lesson, and that is not to count on my mantra a little too far.
