天青(くさぎ)染め - (Clerodendrum trichotomum dye)

「くさぎ」という植物には「臭木」という文字があてられているのですが、染めたときの色の美しさから、志村ふくみ先生が「天から滴り落ちた青」と称されて「天青」という字をあてています。
「くさぎ」は、無媒染で美しい色に染められるのが良いですね。
「地中に眠る美しい宝石は、妖精が作っている」という話を聞いたことがありますが、こうして美しい色を染めていると、自分も妖精になったような気持ちになります。

The plant called “kusagi” was given the character “smelly wood” but because of its beautiful color when dyed, Shimura Fukumi gave it the character “tensei,” which means “blue dripping from the sky“.
“Kusagi” is still good for dyeing in beautiful colors without dye mordant.
I have heard that “beautiful gems lying in the ground are made by fairies,” and when I dye beautiful colors like this, I feel as if I am a fairy myself.
