紫根染め (Purple root dyeing)

畑から掘り起こしたばかりの紫根を、手で揉み出し、紬糸と帯締め用の組紐を染めました。
現代の日本では、紫根染めは、エタノール抽出をすることが多いのですが、エタノール抽出は、ふくみ先生が「紫根が苦しそうだ」と言われたとか。
私も、エタノール抽出はせず、手で揉み出しています。
市場に流通する紫根は乾燥されているのですが、手で揉むのであれば、乾燥する前の掘り起こしたばかりの紫根の方が、断然揉みやすいです。
紫根は、赤紫から青紫まで、幅広く染めることができます。
写真上の紬糸は酢酸アルミ、写真下の組紐は椿灰で媒染をかけました。
どの色も本当に美しいです。

Purple roots, freshly dug up from the fields, were rubbed out by hand and used to dye silk yarn and braided cords for obijime (sash belt). In modern Japan, purple root dyeing is often done by ethanol extraction, but I heard that Fukumi-sensei said that ethanol extraction seems to make the purple root bitter. I do not use ethanol extraction, but rub it out by hand. The purple root in the market is dried, but if you want to rub it by hand, freshly dug up purple root before it is dried is definitely easier to rub. Purple roots can be dyed in a wide range of colors, from reddish purple to blueish purple. The silk yarn in the upper photo was mordanted with aluminum acetate, and the braided cord in the lower photo was mordanted with camellia ash. All colors are really beautiful.
