Thinking about to set up a non-profit organization in Japan?

Start thinking about establishing some kind of entity to challenge social problems or renting an office for your group members to meet up? There are 2 types of organizational forms in Japan.
One is  Shadan(General Incorporated Association) and the other is NPO (Non-Profit Organization).
Although some NPO calls themselves NGOs, there is no official organizational form of NGO in Japan.

If you have plenty of spare money, you have the additional option to establish Zaidan (General Incorporated Foundation), but in that case, please contact me first.

Setting up NPO will be the first option if 

1 You want to try to make the world a better place with the organization.
2 You already have more than 10 people who are interested in joining the organization.
3 You are considering obtaining governmental subsidies, undertaking governmental outsourcing businesses, or participating in governmental projects. 
4 You are quite interested in tax deduction or saving costs to establish the organization.
5  You are brave enough to file yearly reports and other annoying documents in Japanese to your local government.

In the Japanese NPO system, the aim of NPO has to be in 20 social goods fields as follows;

1 Public health, welfare, and healthcare
2 Social education
3 Local community development
4 Tourism
5 Rural development
6 Cultural activities, arts, and sports
7 The environmental protection
8 Disaster relief
9 Local community safety
10 Human rights and world peace
11 International cooperation
12 Gender equality
13 Education of children
14 To develop IT society
15 To contribute to scientific advancement
16 To promote economic activity
17 Employment promotion and career skills development
18 Consumer protection
19 Activities to encourage organizations that engage in activities described above
20 Other activities which are defined by local government law

As you see, a wide range of activities is included so you do not have to worry much about it.
