ロバート・フロスト　選ばなかった道

Robert Frost の The Road Not Taken は、アメリカでは学校の教科書に絶対載っているような、人気のある詩だそうです。

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

初めて読んだときは、人とは違う道を選ぶことを称える詩なのかなと単純に考えました。でも実際は、この詩はフロストの親しい友人が優柔不断なのをからかって書いたのだそうです。

Youtubeでもこの詩に関するビデオをいくつか見つけました。解釈は人によっていろいろあるようですが、開拓者精神を称える詩だと解釈している人が沢山いるそうです。だから人気があるのかもしれません。

ただ、じっくり読んでみると、"sigh"という言葉が使ってあること、「二つの道に大した違いはなかった」ことがちゃんと書いてあること、詩のタイトルを「選んだ道」ではなく「選ばなかった道」にしていることからも、後悔について語っている詩だということが見えてきます。

詩の最後の言葉だけに気を取られて、知らず知らずのうちに、自分の見たいことを見、信じたいことを信じてしまう、人間の心理に思わずはっとしました。

じっくりと丁寧に読むことの大切さと面白さをあらためて教えてもらいました。
