【Virgilの場合】 私が日本で外国語講師をする理由 / Why I am teaching in Japan
エー・トゥー・ゼットには、多くの外国人の語学講師、ALTが所属しています。なんと社員の7割は外国人！
「私が日本で外国語講師をする理由」では、彼らの働き方や大事にしていること、日本で語学教育に携わりながら働き暮らすことについて語ってもらいます。
初回はVirgil（ヴァージル）が登場。長野県南佐久郡にある佐久穂町の佐久穂小・中学校でALTとして英語を教えています。佐久穂町のHPやYouTube、そし2022年に長野朝日放送で放送されたサマーキャンプの取材にも登場！地元に馴染み、とても愛されながら活躍しています。

In "Why I am teaching in Japan", our teachers share their working style, what they value, and what it is like to work and live in Japan in the language education industry.
The first story of this series, Virgil's case. He teaches English as an ALT at Sakuho Elementary and Junior High School in Sakuho Town, Minamisaku County, Nagano Prefecture. He has appeared on Sakuho's website and YouTube, as well as on a summer camp broadcast by Nagano Asahi Broadcasting in 2022!
He is a well-loved and well-liked member of the local community. Please read on to find out what makes his work so rewarding and how he started his life in Nagano.

Self-Introduction 自己紹介
Q: Please tell us about yourself, where you are from, brief background, hobbies, and anything you would like to share about yourself.
出身国、簡単な経歴、趣味などパーソナリティについて教えてください。
A: I’m Virgil, from the Netherlands.
I enjoy jogging and going boxing on weekends.
I have been living and working in Japan since 2016 and this is my 5th year in Nagano. This is also my 5th year being an English teacher at a public school.
I studied Oriental Languages and Communication with Japanese as my major.
オランダ出身のヴァージルです。
趣味は、週末にジョギングとボクシングをすることです。
2016年から日本に滞在していて、長野は5年目になります。公立学校で英語を教えるのも同様に5年目です。
大学では、東洋言語学とコミュニケーションを学び、日本語を専攻していました。
Why did you choose Nagano, Japan? 日本、長野を選んだ理由は何ですか？
Q: Please tell us what brought you to Nagano, and the values that attracted you. Please also tell us about the gaps you found before/after you came here, especially the positive aspects of living in Japan.
長野で暮らすきっかけとなった出来事や価値観についても具体的に教えてください。
また、実際に日本で暮らしてみてのギャップや、良い点について教えてください。
A: I have lived in several places in Japan before and some of them had been hit or miss.
I choose Nagano this time around, since I wanted to experience the country side more and from Nagano Tokyo is only a shinkansen ride away. The longest I have stayed in one place, before coming to Nagano, was about 1 year. This however, is my 5th year in Nagano now. From all the places I have lived, Nagano has been the most comfortable place. The summers don’t get too hot, the nature is amazing and best of all there is no strong dialect. It does get quite cold, so bring some warm clothes.
これまで日本でいくつかの場所に住んだことがありますが、その中には当たり外れがありました。
今回、長野を選んだのは、以前いた場所よりも田舎での生活を体験したかったのと、長野からだと東京へ新幹線ですぐ行けるからです。長野に来るまでは、ひとつの地域に長く滞在したのは1年ぐらいでしたが、長野に来てから今年で5年目になります。今まで住んだ場所の中で、長野は一番快適な場所ですね。夏は暑すぎないですし、自然は素晴らしいし、何より強い方言がないのが助かっています。
冬の寒さはとても厳しいので、暖かい服でお越しください。
Why did you choose your current job? What do you find rewarding? 現在の仕事を選んだ理由とやりがいは？
Q: Please tell us about your current position (role) and job description in detail.
Please also tell us why you started your career as a language instructor and what you find rewarding about it.
現在のポジション（役割）やお仕事内容について、できるだけ具体的に説明してください。
またそのお仕事である語学講師という仕事をはじめたきっかけ、やりがいについても、具体的に教えてください。
A: I used to work as a Coordinator for International Relations as part of the JET program. It was great job and I got to go to amazing places. The thing I enjoyed the most about the job however, was the interaction I had with students. I was in charge of a High school exchange and guiding students was actually the most enjoyable part of the job.
I then decided the quit my job as a CIR and become a full time language instructor instead. The most rewarding part of the job is seeing children enjoy exploring the unknown and acquiring new skills through English education.
I currently teach in Elementary Schools alongside the homeroom teacher. Creating fun and engaging classes is a challenge, but seeing students have fun while speaking English makes it worth it.
私は以前、JETプログラムの一環として、国際交流員（CIR）として働いていました。仕事はとても楽しく、各地の素晴らしい場所に行くことができました。CIRの仕事で一番楽しかったのは、生徒たちとの交流でした。高校生の交換留学を担当しており、留学生を案内しているときが一番充実した時間だったといっても過言ではありません。
その後、国際交流員の仕事を辞め、フルタイムの語学講師になることにしました。英語教育を通じて、子どもたちが未知の世界を楽しみ、新しいスキルを身につける姿を間近で見守ることができるのが、この仕事の最大のやりがいです。
現在、ALTとして小学校で担任の先生と一緒に授業をしています。楽しく、魅力的な授業を作るのは大変ですが、生徒が楽しみながら英語を話している姿を見ると、この仕事をしていてよかったと心から思います。
About your future career これからのキャリアについて
Q: Please tell us your thoughts on your future career, not only as a language instructor in Japan, but also from the point to develop your career globally.
日本で語学講師として描くキャリアに止まらず、グローバルにキャリア形成
していくことについてのご意見を教えてください。
A: I hope to continue making engaging and relevant English classes and to inspire students to see the value of learning a second language. I hope to slowly change the image of traditional English classes, where students simply repeat after the teacher, to classes with relevant language activities that are student centered.
私は、魅力的で有意義な英語の授業を作り続け、生徒たちに第二言語を学ぶことの価値を見出してほしいと願っています。
生徒が先生の言うことをただ繰り返すという従来の英語の授業のイメージを、本当に使える英語を学べる生徒中心の授業に少しずつ変えていきたいと思っています。
About the features of AtoZ and the ease of working there エー・トゥー・ゼットの特徴や働きやすさについて
Q: Please tell us about the good aspects of your current work environment for those who're interested in joining you at AtoZ.
新たな仲間に向けてのＰＲメッセージとして、今の職場環境の良い部分を教えてください。
A: AtoZ has been great supporting me since I started five years ago. Giving us the option to lease items was a great help when I first moved in. Things you can lease include a washing machine, gas stove and a microwave. Having these items at your home when you move in, makes moving to a foreign country easier. They also helped me getting my first car lease and registering at the town hall. These can all be difficult procedures, especially when you come to Japan for the first time and don’t speak the language. The on the job training as well as regular training sessions have given me the confidence to stand in the classroom and conduct classes. Whenever I have had a problem regarding accommodation or school related, AtoZ has always been quick to help me out.
5年前に入社して以来、エー・トゥー・ゼットには大変お世話になっています。長野に引っ越しをした際、アパートには洗濯機、ガスコンロ、電子レンジなどの家電のリース品がすでに用意してあり、とても助かりました。特に海外から来る人たちにとっては便利だと思います。
また、車のリース手続きや役所での住民登録なども手伝ってもらいました。初めての来日で言葉もわからない場合、こういった手続きはとても難しいと思います。
さらに、研修も充実しており、トレーナーに自分の授業を見てもらいその場でアドバイスをもらえることや、定期的にワークショップが開催されるので、教壇に立って授業をする自信を持つことができました。住居など生活に関することや学校での問題が発生したとき、エー・トゥー・ゼットは常に迅速に対応してくれます。
