Interstellar を見て.
On the day before yesterday, (9/Aug/2022) I have finally watched the world famous space movie, Interstellar.
It is a bit surprising that I haven’t watched it untill now, with the fact that I am a big fan of Sci-Fi movies.
I love how Science is presented so beautifully in those movies, with arts of the storyline, the acting, and of course, the quality of visuals. The resolutions of images in those movies are always breathtaking.
*Caution! There will be spoilers..
Summary
This movie is a heartwarming family story about a man who used to be a trained pilot in NASA.
In the desertified world where dust storms occur at an abnormal rate, crops were dying from common diseases. Humanity on Earth was facing severe food shortages which lead to starvation and hunger. The trained pilot, Cooper has long been away from his original job of space explorer, and he was stuck in the countryside working as a farmer.
One day, he saw books falling from his daughter's bookshelves unnaturally and dusts piling up on the floor in some mysterious way. Cooper and his daughter, Murph saw this as some supernatural being trying to communicate with them. Cooper could decode one message, which was a coordinate of an unknown place. The curiosity they both shared drove them into the unknown, and found NASA working secretly from the world. (It was prohibited to use the money for space exploration in a world where the priority of the usage of money was to make crops)
Surprisingly, NASA has found a wormhole located close to Saturn and was planning to send pilots to the other side, to find a habitable world where humanity can thrive again. They had 2 different plans,
Plan A was to send all the living humans to the habitable planet and to do so, scientists needed to “harness” gravity.
Professor Brand who was the director of the whole project was trying to solve the equation that could be used to control the gravity of Earth so they can lift the spaceships with humans on them.
Plan B on the other hand was to leave helpless humans on slowly dying planet Earth meanwhile transporting human eggs and sperms to the habitable world, “resetting” the history of the human race.
They have already sent some space rangers and found some candidates for the new world. Happy to see the experienced pilot Cooper, professor Brand immediately asked him if he could be a pilot of the exploration. Cooper felt responsible and replied to him with the answer Yes. However, Murph strongly disagreed with his decision and was very upset when he left for the mission. Unsure of when he could see his daughter again, he left the Earth to find another home.
Although NASA has sent astronauts to explore a total of twelve planets, only three of them were promising.
The first planet that Cooper and his group visited was Miller’s planet. Although the conditions were almost perfect for life to form with enough water and organic compounds, they did not see any signs of life because of Gargantua - the massive black hole that it is orbiting around. Unfortunately, they could not collect the data taken by the group that previously visited there because of the unimaginably huge waves that crushed down on the spaceship.
Meanwhile, because time passes more slowly close to strong gravitational forces of black holes, about twenty years have passed on Earth while they have only spent about 2-3 hours on the planet.
Cooper receives a video message from Murph who became the same age as him saying that she hates him from bottom of her heart for leaving her behind.
They decided that Miller’s planet was not the best choice to make, and headed to another candidate, Mann’s planet. It was an icy planet with no signs of life, and they found out that the astronaut who came to this planet, Dr. Mann, lied just to be rescued. At the same time, Cooper and his group discovered that professor Brand was also lying to them about the plans.
He has already known that the equation to harness gravity was impossible to solve without the quantum data that could only be taken from ‘inside’ black holes, which was thought to be impossible.
They were only thinking about plan B in the first place.
Feeling devastated, they tried to go and find another hope in the third world candidate Edmund’s planet, going against professor Brand. However, this protest failed when Dr. Mann, who was on professor Brand’s side, blew up the mothership, the Endurance, and destroyed parts of it.
They could not accelerate the ship enough to go to the planet, so they intentionally got close to the Gargantua, the black hole,
to use the gravitational force to accelerate.
However, the force was not enough and Cooper decided to undock the ship he was in to accelerate another ship where his crewmate was. (Third law of motion) The ship with his crewmate in it could accelerate enough to head to Edmund’s planet, but
Cooper got sucked into the black hole.
(It is not known how physics works inside black holes so from this point the story will be based on the imagination of the writer and not science)
Inside the blackhole, Cooper saw an endless five-dimensional world shown in three dimensions where time was a physical dimension.
He saw an infinite amount of little moments in Murph’s room when she was a child, all from the back of her bookshelves. When he pushed some books, the books in the frame of moment fell to the floor.
He noticed it was gravity that could permeate through all of the dimensions.
Luckily, he was sucked in with a brilliant computer that could analyze the quantum data inside the black hole. He smartly used the watch that was on the bookshelf to send the quantum data in the form of a morse. Meanwhile, Murph was in her old room thinking about the messages that supernatural beings sent to her and her father years ago. She held an old watch that her father gave her before he left, feeling nostalgic. She thought the watch was broken because its second hand wouldn’t move in the usual way. However, she saw the order in its movements. She found out it was morse!
She decoded it to gain the quantum data that was long required to solve the gravity equation, and she finally solved it, allowing plan A to be executed.
Cooper could somehow get out of Gargantua with the help of the supernatural beings that once told him the coordinate of NASA and helped him to send messages to Murph inside the black hole. He was found in the Outerspace, rescued by a spaceship with countless humans in it. As he was inside a blackhole for a while, his time passed very slowly relative to the time on Earth.
As he woke up on the bed inside the spaceship, he finally saw his daughter who was now way older than him.
Happily ever after, they were together again.
Even with a great age difference between them, they loved each other as a family.
Although he faced a lot of difficulties throughout his journey in space, he decided to head to Edmund’s planet where his crewmate is at the end of the movie.
phew!
I was just planning to write few sentences to describe what happens in the movie but I got too into it like crazy, because it was so fun!
I hope this summary could help some people understand the story better.
I also want to write some physics explanations of this movie some day, because it will be 10 times more interesting when you know the physics behind it. I am still a learner, and I really hope I will be able to understand the equations that were written on the chalkboard in one scene of this movie. I guess it will be 100 times more fun if I could understand General theory of relativity more deeply.
See ya next time :)
