What was your first overseas experience?
It was a family trip when I was in kindergarten. As for the first trip I made on my own it was when I turned 22 and after graduating from university. I went to Australia on a working holiday visa. After that I returned to Japan and then came to Singapore where I've been for the last 5 years.
Why did you decide to go on a working holiday upon graduation?
Several people recommended a working holiday to me. At that time I was planning on becoming a physical education teacher. I wanted to see the world before I plunged into society so initially I was going to make a trip around Japan. As I was doing part-time jobs to save money for that trip, the owner of the place I was working at said to me, "instead of going around Japan why not go to Australia?" And so I put it on my list of things to do before
starting work as a teacher. Before departure I had saved around USD 10K. After paying for insurance, my ticket and the visa I was left with around half of that when I got to Australia.
