On the other hand, how did the leading members in the Meiji government react to Shozo Tanaka's direct appeal? Some of the bloodthirsty,military-educated cabinet ministers were heard to say ”We must condemn the infidel who tried to put The Majesty in harm's way !”. Most ministers, however, said ”Don't get excited.Think about it and see. The other party is not just an old man. It is that Shozo Tanaka. If we carelessly condemn him, all hell may break loose.” They were very cautious.
In fact, the direct appeal was made to make sense to Shozo and Ishikawa Hanzan, no matter which way it went.
The Meiji government has often used the authority of the Emperor in various reforms. In other words, it was they themselves who created the great Emperor Meiji. If the Emperor were to read the direct appeal and issue an imperial order to ”stop Ashio, ” the government would have no choice but to comply. If the government disobeyed the Emperor's order, the government's policies would be considered as a failure, and it would not be surprising if the people of the country would start a movement to overthrow the government.
Even if a direct appeal could not be delivered , the execution of a single old man without cause would have provoked condemnation from the European countries and could have reneged on the promise to rivise the unequal treaties. In other words, the government was set up by Shozo to trap the forking the rook while checking the king.
So the government's answer was, lo and behold, ”There was no direct appeal itself.” It was strong defense. The government. therefore, has been trying to make the case that Shozo Tanaka risked his life to appeal directly to the Emperor, saying, ”A crazy old man just happened to fall in front of the wagon.”,and let him off the hook.
This was the reason for the lamentation, ”I am Shozo Tanaka, a madman.”
Of course, however, it was not supported to end like this.
