8/21 ガリガリ君を食べてインフレについてふと思ったこと
Do you like Garigari-kun? l love it. We can eat easily and it is cheap. It is very nice like Kakigori (Japanese shaved ice). I’m not sure if Kakigori is sold in foreign country. I’ve never seen it in L.A.
Getting back to Garigari-kun, I’ve heard that the concept of Garigari-kun is “shaved ice you can eat with one-hand”. It is super innovative product in Japan. Everyone knows the splended ice product and it has been very popular for a very long time. I think the price is ¥60-¥70.
When the company started selling it, the ice candy’s price was about ¥50. The website says the price was raised to ¥60 in 1991. And then it was raised to ¥70 in 2016. The price increase is about 0.6%(YOY), I guess. Many people says Japanese inflation rate has been very low while other countrie’s inflation rates have been high. Generally speaking, a countrie’s consumer price increase, then the currency value fall. Therefore USD/JPY should have fallen, I guess.
In fact, when I was in the U.S, my life was tough financially. My salary was Yen base, but I needed to buy USD. Lunch price was about $30~50 a day.
Japanese business person’s salary has not been changed, and consumer price hasn’t changed too. So when you are in Japan, it is not unconvenient because you can get many things by using Yen salary. But it would be hard to live in foreign countries.
Many Japanese companies have made efforts to unchange product price for a lomg time. Consumer price hasn’t changed so that many people’s salary has also been flat. I think there are many reason like the structure of labor market. There has not been pressure that companies should raise staff salary. The currency Yen should have been higher but it has not.
I have no idea about the solution, but I hope my salary would rise lol.
