これで、仏教論理学研究の歴史的な流れが把握出来ると思う。桂氏の筆は、あまりにシュタインケルナーに入れ込みすぎている観もあるが、確かに、この分野のリーダーは、前ウイーン大学教授シュタインケルナーであった。私事に渡って恐縮だが、10年ほど前、私もシュタインケルナーの下で、1年間、学んだことはある。その時は、『集量論』複注のテキスト作りの授業を聞かせてもらった。私は、真摯な学徒ではなかったので、何の成果も得ていないが、シュタインケルナーの人を逸らさぬ明敏さには、なるほどと思わされた。言い方は悪いかもしれないが、シュタインケルナーは、ボス、親分と呼ぶにふさわしい人物である。彼の業績は揺るぎないものだとは思う。しかし、師フラウヴァルナーに比べると、学問的拡がりは小さく、仏教論理学を矮小化したようにも見えるのである。それはともかく、シュタインケルナー自身の言葉で、仏教論理学サンスクリット原文のテキストを入手するまでの、経緯を伺ってみよう。英語原文と共に、示しておく。
　私が、はじめて、ダルマキールティの『量決着』のサンスクリット写本が存在するといううわさを耳にしたのは、1984年だった。オーストリア学術アカデミーが北京国家少数民族中央協会を正式訪問した際であった。私は、宝物のような情報提供を、故ワンセン教授から受けた。当時、彼は、仏教認識論の伝統についてのリーダー的学者だった。その時は、知らなかったが、ワン教授は、この情報を彼の生徒ルオシャオから受け取っていたのである。彼は、1984年と1985年に、チベット政府の第1回コレクションカタログ説明の準備中、ポタラ宮殿のコレクションの中に、その写本を発見したのだった。しかるに、2004年の1月まで、それ以上の詳しい情報はなく、その写本に何らかのアクセスが可能なのかもわからなかった。2004年に、中国チベット学研究センターとオーストリア学術アカデミーとの間に、共同一般協定が樹立したのである。この協定は、チベット自治区の貝葉写本の写真版にアクセスし、研究するということに関するものであった。
I first heard whisperd news of the existence of Sanskrit manuscripts of Darmakirti’s Pramanaviniscaya in 1984,during an official visit by delegation from the Austrian Academy of Scieces to the Central Institute for National Minorities in Beijing.I owe this precious gift of information to the late Prof.Wang Sen,then China’s leading scholar on the Buddhist epistemological tradition.At that time I didn’t know that Prof.Wang had received this information from his student Luo Zhao,who had found these manuscripts in the Potala palace’s collection while preparing the first descriptive catalogue of the collection for tha Tibetan Government in 1984 and 1985.However,no more detailed information was to be had nor any kind of access to these manuscripts was possible until January 2004,when a general agreement of coorperation was reached between the China Tibetology Research Center and Austrian Academy of Sciences.This agreement concerned access to and research on the photocopies of palm leaf manuscripts from the Tibetan Autonomous Region.( Dharmakirti’s Pramanaviniscaya Chapters1 and2 critically edited by E Steinkellner,Chaina Tibetology Resesrch Center Austorian Academy of Sziences,Sanskrit Texts from the Tibetan Autonomous Region founded and edited in chief by L.Phuntsogs and E.Steinkellner No.2,Beijing-Vienna,2007,pp.ix-x)
