TOEIC SPEAKING PART 6 RECAP

These past few weeks, I have been doing a couple of Instagram Live sessions about the TOEIC SPEAKING test. For those of you who watched my live sessions, thank you :) For those who missed out (or those who want to review), here I have provided a little recap of my sessions. I hope this information will help you out in some way.

Today, I will be sharing some tips for Part 6- Express an Opinion.

Here are the points I covered in my Instagram Live Session:

1 question; preparation time: 30 seconds, speaking time: 60 seconds.

The test-taker is to express his/her own opinion on a designated topic. This section is graded on grammar, word choice, and consistency, as well as pronunciation, intonation, and accent. The validity (relevance) and completeness of the answers are also evaluated.

★How to get a full score【

1. 意見:I think.../I believe.../In my opinion...
2. 理由:This is because...
First,.../For instance,.../Last year,...
In conclusion,...

なければ、仮定の話("If I was...")

【Sample Question and Answer】

Q. Do you think you need a tour guide when you travel overseas? Why or why not?

A. [意見]I believe that I would need a tour guide when I travel overseas. [理由]This is because I am terrible with directions, and if I don't have a tour guide with me, I would get lost and face danger. [体験談]Last year, when I visited China for the first time in my life without a tour guide, I got lost in the middle of nowhere. Furthermore, I could not speak Chinese so I couldn't ask anybody for directions either. I was scared for my life and thought I would never be able to travel by myself ever again. If I had a tour guide with me back then, I know I would not have had such a traumatic experience in China. [意見の再提示]In conclusion, I would definitely need a tour guide when I travel overseas.

Q2. Some people provide their children with cell phones while they are in elementary school, but others think that is too early for a child to have a cell phone. Who do you think is right and why?

A. [意見]I think that it is acceptable to provide children with cell phones while they are in elementary school. [理由]This is because by letting them carry a cell phone, parents are able to provide safety for their children. [具体例]Cell phones have useful safety features such as GPS, alarm, and emergency call. When children are lost or in danger, they can make use of these features and get in contact with their parents. The parents could also reach their kids anytime. [意見の再提示]In conclusion, I believe it is alright to provide children with cell phones for safety reasons.

【Sample Questions for Practice】

Q1. Which do you think is better: starting your career at a big company, or starting with a business of your own?

Q2. If you were to learn a new skill, what would you learn and why?

Q3. Some people prefer to take a job that does not pay well but does provide a lot of time off from work. What is your opinion about taking a job with a low salary that has a lot of vacation time?

Q4. Some companies make donations to local charities and community groups. Other companies do not and leave it up to their staff to decide whether to make personal donations. Should companies donate part of their profits to charities? State your opinion and provide reasons for your view.
