束草に行ってきた(Sokcho Trip)
束草はソウルから2時間の距離にある海に面した人口8万の小都市だ。 しかし、美しい海、雪岳山の景色、そして食べ物で韓国の主要観光地の一つだ。
いろいろな観光地があるが、私が一番好きなところの一つが束草だ。 釜山（プサン）、麗水（ヨス）、木浦（モクポ）、全州（チョンジュ）、慶州（キョンジュ）なども良いところだが、移動するのに時間がかかったり、束草（ソクチョ）に比べて何か一つ足りない感じがする。
まず束草は西に雪岳山があり、東に海がある。 特に雪岳山は韓国で最も美しい山だと思われる。 高さは済州道の漢拏山の方が高いが、雪岳山ならではの美しさは特にその雄大さはどこから見ても感嘆を誘う。 特に、少し離れたところから眺める雪岳山はさらに美しい。 宿所を予約しなくても誰でも入れるハンファコンドミニアムや大明リゾートは、雪岳山を背景に写真を撮るのに良い場所だ。 市内バスが走っているので、乗用車がなくても移動するのに不便ではない。
食べ物は韓国戦争当時、避難民が建てた村、アバイスンデ村がまず推薦場所だ。 北朝鮮地域の人々の食べ物である冷麺とスンデをおいしく楽しむことができる。
束草観光中央市場は在来式伝統市場で最も食べ物として有名な場所だ。 タッカンジョン、エビフライ、イカスンデ、寿司、ホットクが代表的な料理である。 人の見物もしながら比較的安い価格で束草の代表料理を楽しむことができる。 多くの人々が寿司を食べるために海辺にもよく行くが、海辺の場合、店を間違って選べば価格とサービス共に失敗することがあり、比較的失敗が少なく適当な価格の市場を私は好む。
ハンファコンド周辺には束草で直接作った豆腐で有名な鶴沙坪村がある。 「000おばあさんの家」という看板が並んでいる村で、スンドゥブチゲが特に有名だ。 「000おばあさんの家」という意味は長い伝統と手の味を持ったという象徴のような意味であるためか、すべての店の名前がこのようになっている。
ここには尺山温泉もあるが、日本の温泉と比べても劣らない温泉水であるため、安い価格で入浴するという考えで一度訪れてみるのも悪くないと思う。
その他に有名なパン屋、カフェ、観光地などがたくさんあるが、この程度で旅行をすれば十分に束草旅行の価値を感じることができると思う。
そして、時間があれば北にさらに上がれば、高城というところが南に下がれば江陵という都市がそれぞれ存在するが、2ヵ所もやはりとても魅力的な都市だ。 時間的余裕があれば、一緒に楽しんでみるのもよさそうだ。
韓国が非常戒厳令で騒々しく、韓国観光が大きな影響を受けている。 もし危険ではないかと外国人なら不安に思うかもしれない。 全く問題ないという点を改めて強調する。 ソウル市内は今でも多くの外国人観光客を見ることができる。 もし今回の事態で韓国旅行を迷っている方がいらっしゃいましたら、どうぞお越しください。

Sokcho is a small city with a population of 80,000, located two hours away from Seoul and bordered by the sea. Despite its modest size, it is one of Korea’s major tourist destinations, thanks to its stunning beaches, the beauty of Seoraksan Mountain, and its diverse local cuisine.
While there are many tourist destinations in Korea, Sokcho is one of my personal favorites. Cities like Busan, Yeosu, Mokpo, Jeonju, and Gyeongju are also wonderful, but they often require longer travel times or seem to lack something compared to Sokcho.
Sokcho's unique charm lies in its location, with Seoraksan to the west and the sea to the east. I believe Seoraksan is the most beautiful mountain in Korea. While Hallasan on Jeju Island is taller, Seoraksan has its own grandeur that inspires awe no matter where you view it from. Especially when seen from a distance, its majesty is breathtaking. For great photo opportunities with Seoraksan as a backdrop, Hanwha Resort and Daemyung Resort are open to everyone, even without reservations. Public buses operate in the area, so getting around without a car is convenient.
When it comes to food, I recommend the Abai Sundae Village, established by North Korean refugees during the Korean War. Here, you can enjoy North Korean delicacies like naengmyeon (cold noodles) and soondae (Korean blood sausage).
The Sokcho Tourist & Central Market is another must-visit spot, famous for its traditional marketplace atmosphere and delicious food offerings. Signature dishes include dakgangjeong (sweet and spicy fried chicken), shrimp tempura, squid soondae, sushi, and hotteok (sweet pancakes). The market offers not only tasty food at reasonable prices but also a chance to people-watch and soak up the local culture. While some visitors go to the seaside for sushi, I prefer the market for its consistency in quality, affordability, and fewer chances of disappointment.
Near Hanwha Resort, there’s the Haksapyeong Village, renowned for its tofu made fresh in Sokcho. The village is filled with restaurants named “Grandmother’s House,” where they serve particularly famous soft tofu stew. The name symbolizes tradition and authentic flavors, which explains why so many establishments share this naming pattern.
Sokcho is also home to Cheoksan Hot Springs, whose water quality rivals that of Japanese hot springs. A visit here for a relaxing and affordable bath is highly recommended.
Apart from these highlights, there are many popular bakeries, cafes, and other tourist attractions in Sokcho. However, exploring the spots mentioned above should be enough to experience the value of a Sokcho trip.
If you have more time, you could visit Goseong to the north or Gangneung to the south. Both are charming cities worth exploring if your schedule permits.
Lastly, I’d like to address concerns regarding recent unrest in Korea. While the country may seem politically turbulent, there’s no danger to tourists. Foreign visitors are still visible throughout Seoul, and tourism remains vibrant. If you're hesitant about visiting Korea because of the current situation, I urge you to reconsider. Your visit would not only support Korea’s swift return to normalcy but also contribute to the global community.
