クリスプ対チップス: 混乱を解消しよう Crisps vs Chips: Clearing the Confusion
イギリス人の単語を使って生徒を混乱させるのが好きな「意地悪な先生」なので、イギリスの言葉をあえて使っています。（実は意地悪ではなくて、彼らがイギリスにしばらく行く予定なので、準備させてあげたいだけです！）最近、食べ物のクイズをしましたが、特に「クリスプ」と「チップス」が大混乱を引き起こしました。
もうお気づきかもしれませんが、イギリス英語とアメリカ英語では、食べ物の名前（や他の単語）に違いがあります。例えば、イギリスの「クリスプ」は、アメリカでは「ポテトチップス」と呼ばれます！
子どもの頃、アメリカを訪れた時に、アメリカの「ポテトチップス」が私が「クリスプ」と呼ぶものだと知って混乱したのを覚えています。そして、今では皆さんも混乱しているかもしれませんね。では、分かりやすく説明しましょう！
イギリスで「クリスプ」と言えば、薄くスライスされて揚げられた、パリパリのポテトスナックを指します。クリスプという名前は、その特徴的な「薄くてパリパリ」な食感に由来しています。この名前で、イギリス人が「チップス」と呼ぶものとは違うとすぐに分かるんです。
「チップス」は、イギリスでは厚切りで、熱々のフライドポテトを意味します。地元のチップショップでカレーソースを添えて買うと、特に美味しいです！
アメリカ人が「イギリスのチップスはフライドポテトと同じだ」と言うのを聞くことがありますが、それは全然違います。
「フライ」は、イギリスでは細めのファストフードスタイルのポテトスティックを指すのが一般的で、マクドナルドで出てくるようなものです。
簡単にまとめると：
• クリスプ (crisps)：薄くてパリパリのスナック（アメリカでは「ポテトチップス」と呼ばれます）。
• チップス (chips)：厚切りの熱々フライドポテトで、通常はフィッシュと一緒に出されますが、私の意見ではカレーソースと一緒が一番。

Because I'm a mean teacher I like to confuse my students by using British words to refer to things. (Actually I'm not mean, they're going to the UK for a while, I'm trying to prepare them!) We recently did a food quiz, and in particular crisps and chips caused a whole lot of confusion.
You probably already noticed that there are differences between food names (and other words) in the UK and the US. One example is the crisp, which in America is a potato chip!
I remember as a child when I visited America that I was confused that potato chips there were actually what I would call crisps. And by now think I have confused everyone.
So let's clear things up!
In the UK, “crisps” are thinly sliced, fried, crunchy potato snacks in a bag, a perfect snack. Known as crisps likely because of their defining texture: thin and crispy. The name “crisps” highlights their defining texture: thin and crispy. This name makes it clear that they are different to what British people call Chips.
"Chips” in the UK means thick-cut, hot, fried potatoes—especially delicious when bought from the local chip-shop with curry sauce.
Now I sometimes hear American people say that British chips are the same as Fries, but that's definitely not the case.
“Fries” in the UK usually means the thinner, fast-food-style potato sticks, like those you get from McDonald's.
In short:
Crisps: Thin, crunchy, snacks (known as “potato chips” in the US).
Chips: Thick-cut, hot potatoes typically paired with fish, but in my opinion best with curry sauce.
Fries: Thinner, fast-food-style fried potatoes.
