【あらすじ】
旅の僧が京都から奈良に向かう途中、宇治の里に赴き、一人の老人に出会います。僧に宇治の名所を教えてほしいと頼まれた老人は、僧を平等院へと案内します。老人はかつて源三位頼政がこの場所に扇を敷いて自害したことを話し、自身が頼政の幽霊であると名のり、姿を消します。夜、頼政の幽霊が現れ、平家に敗れたときの様子を語ります。高倉の宮［たかくらのみや：以仁王（もちひとおう）］に謀反［むほん］を勧めた結果、都落ちすることになり、平家に追われた頼政らは宇治川の橋板を外し、対岸で追手を待ち構えました。平家方は田原の又太郎忠綱が先陣として、宇治川に馬を乗り入れて対岸に攻め込み、合戦となります。頼政の息子二人も討たれてしまい、ついに頼政は平等院の庭の芝に扇を敷いて、辞世の和歌を詠んで自害した旨を語り、消えていきます。

【Synopsis.】
A traveling monk goes to the village of Uji on his way from Kyoto to Nara, where he meets an old man.The old man asks the monk to show him the sights of Uji and takes him to Byodo-in Temple.The old man tells how Minamoto no San no Yorimasa once laid down a fan at this spot and committed suicide, claiming to be the ghost of Yorimasa, and disappears.At night, the ghost of Yorimasa appears and recounts how he was defeated by the Heike clan.After encouraging the Takakura no Miya (Prince Mochihitowo) to rebel against the Heike, the Heike were forced to leave the capital.The Heike, led by Matataro Tadatsuna of Tahara, rode their horses into the Uji River and attacked the other side of the river, leading to a battle.Yorimasa's two sons are also killed, and Yorimasa finally lays down his fan on the grass in the Byodoin garden, composes a waka poem of resignation, tells that he committed suicide, and disappears.
