Studying Abroad Diary 4 Move into the dorm- beginning of the fall term! About events

Summary so far

After moving into the dorm, I spent several days preparing for the upcoming semester, including purchasing the necessities, getting used to the communal kitchen, and having conversations with my roommates! Things other than pizza are so expensive anyway….

Movie night

The first event I experienced in NY was the movie night!! My friend from Japan told me about this event and went together. It seems that this kind of event takes place often. It was held in Bryant Park. It's not like Central Park in terms of a scale, but like the oasis in the desert in that it is located in so busy area in Manhattan( between 5th and 6th Avenue, 42nd street) and surrounded by super high buildings. The content of the event was so simple; just come to the park and watch a movie on a big screen. Just like I expected, each one brought a large portion of fav foods, snacks, or beverage with them to share with others.

An hour after my friend and I arrived at the park, his roommate came with his friends. He bought me a beer in exchange for slices of pizza I shared with him. We spent another hour just chatting with each other until the movie started, wondering what kind of movie would be on screen.
At around 7:00 p.m., the movie started. The title was " Good Burger", which  I felt was the most typical American movie I've ever seen. If the movie broadcast had been mysterious or had a serious story, I might had to give up writing the story of a movie right here, but I definitely don't have to; It was such a simple and straightforward story. Another thing I worried about was whether I could understand what was going on in English, but thanks to the clear story, that point was also fine.
Overall, I really enjoyed watching the night movie not under the light of the stars, but of the buildings, which was something special about this event.

karaoke

After the movie was finished, we went to karaoke in a Korean town together. Some karaoke limit the age of the entrance over 21, so we couldn't use the first karaoke. But we could do the second one. Soon after entering the room, we started singing, but I found it difficult to fully enjoy the venue tbh. The reason was too simple; I didn't know the song they sang. And the other problem was that I could not sing English songs well, either. I didn't want to spoil the fun, so my strategy was to focus on hearing the song while pretending to dance, and then try to join from the second part. I'm not sure whether it worked or not, rather everyone was probably aware of it, but I learned the necessity to get used to listening and singing songs other than the Japanese one.
Acutually after i realized that it would be almost impossible to enjoy karaoke at this rate from the next time on, I kept the playlist of what they sang so that I could keep up with them from the next time. Doesn't it sound strange? But i know it's the robust way from my experience; pretend to be able to do something for the first time, and learn a lot after that to catch up with them from next time.

Midnight nyc tour

On the same day, my friend's roommate brought us to the TimesSquire and Empire State Building after the karaoke, both of which I had never seen before at that time, so that experience also so special. When we finished everything, it was almost 4 a.m. so I felt really sleepy, but I know what's the most important thing other than my life is experiences while I'm here in nyc. I pretty enjoyed everything on that day, and I'm sure that it was my first step to know every kinds of fun in nyc.

Orientation for an exchange student

There was an Orientation for the exchange students like me at the vertical campus of Baruch College. Actually, it was my first time to come into the campus, so I was looking forward to meeting other students there.
First, there was a campus tour, going around the campus while listening to the explanation from the student of Baruch. It was pretty fun for me as the campus has 19 floors and the basement where the gym and event space is located. Whether I would use it or not, there were some well-equipped educational facilities like a writing training center, a speech training room, and a computer room.
After we enjoyed the campus tour, we had lunch time. The menu was chicken and salad role, which is like the one often seen in Starbucks and it tastes fairly good. By the end of lunchtime, I knew a lot about the students at the same table. I imagined that it would take much time to feel comfortable about talking with other students, so it was quite surprising for me and, at the same time, made me optimistic about the upcoming college life.
The rest of the event was a unilateral, boring, but important presentations from many staff of the International Center of Baruch. It was impressive to me that one of the Spanish students sitting next to me said "It's time for Siesta". I thought it was just joking, but she said she actually takes a daily nap for an hour when I asked her later so I felt a little bit happy to know that what I've learned was real; the same kind of thing as how I feel when I see the historical object that is on a textbook in a place like a museum.
Overall it was so enjoyable event for me since it was the experience which made me feel  I would be able to do well at College.

Baruch Outside
Isn't it similar to the Waseda 3rd building on Main campus?
